How much paint for a 12 ft accent wall?
One gallon covers two coats
The short answer
A 12 ft wide accent wall with an 8 ft ceiling is 96 ft². Two coats cover 192 ft², which at about 375 ft² per gallon is 0.5 gallons. A single gallon is enough, with some left for touch-ups. Dark accent colours often need a third coat or a tinted primer.
How it is worked out
- Wall area: 12 ft × 8 ft = 96 ft²
- Two coats: 192 ft²
- Divide by 375 ft² per gallon: 0.5 gallons
Other sizes and options
| Ceiling height | Wall area | 1 coat | 2 coats | 3 coats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | 96 ft² | 0.3 gal | 0.5 gal | 0.8 gal |
| 9 ft | 108 ft² | 0.3 gal | 0.6 gal | 0.9 gal |
| 10 ft | 120 ft² | 0.3 gal | 0.6 gal | 1 gal |
What can change the amount?
Deep reds, navy and charcoal hide less well, so plan on a tinted primer or a third coat. Painter's tape along the corners keeps the accent edge sharp next to the other walls.
