Chapter 01
How to use Roomveil
What Roomveil is, a five-step quick start, units, what is saved, and using it on a phone.
Roomveil is a free planner for home projects that runs in the web browser on any phone, tablet or computer. You measure, choose a look, see it on a photo of your own room, and get a list of exactly what to buy. There is nothing to install and no account to make.
What you can do with it
- WallsPaint, wallpaper or tile on a wall or a whole room. Cans, rolls and tiles counted.
- FloorsWood or vinyl planks, or floor tiles. Boxes counted, with spare for cuts.
- Doors & windowsThe right size to order from what you measured, in the style you like.
- BathroomsPlace a toilet, sink, tub and shower, and check each has the space US code asks for.
- Measured drawingsA floor plan, four wall views and lists, printed to scale or saved as PDF and CAD.
- QuotesFor trades: your prices, labor, tax and a one-page quote with your company name.
What you need
- A tape measure. A laser measure is quicker. On an iPhone, the built-in Measure app is fine for a first idea.
- A phone camera, if you want to see the result on your own room. This is optional; there is a sample room to try things on.
- About five minutes for a wall or a floor.
Quick start in five steps
- Open roomveil.com and press Start a room.
- Pick a job, for example Walls.
- Answer one question at a time. Type your sizes in any unit: 12' 6", 150in or 3.8m all work.
- Choose a look and see it on your photo, or on the sample room.
- Read What you'll need. Take the list to the store, or press Share to send it.

- Start a room takes you to the list of jobs.
- Open drawing mode goes straight to measured drawings.
- This manual.
- For contractors: a shortcut to the tools for trades.
- Get a system built: custom software from the makers of Roomveil.
- Settings: units, money, everyday or architect’s words, and Pro mode.

- The job. Every tool asks one plain question at a time.
- Tap the arrow, or anywhere on the row.
- Everyday words or Architect’s terms. Only the wording changes, never the features.
Moving around
- Step 3 of 6 at the top tells you where you are. The line under it fills up as you go.
- The big button at the bottom always moves you forward. Its words tell you what comes next, like See it on my wall.
- The arrow at the top left goes back one step. On the first step it goes back to the homepage.
- The curved arrow at the top right is Undo. It appears once you have changed something.
- The cog opens Settings.
Units and money
Roomveil guesses your units from your phone's language. Change them any time in Settings, or on the first step of the walls, floor, bathroom and drawing tools. Whatever you choose, you can still type any unit into a box and Roomveil converts it: 4.2m, 420cm, 13' 9" and 165in are all understood. In feet and inches, a plain number in a door or window box means inches.

Money can be shown in $, £, € or Rs. The prices are examples only; you can type your own on any line.
What is saved, and what is not
- Saved on this device: your room drawings, your units and money symbol, any prices you typed, your Pro mode business details, and your choice of everyday or architect's words.
- Never uploaded: photos. Roomveil opens your phone's own photo picker, the photo is used inside the browser, and it is gone when you close the page.
- No account and no cookies. Visits are counted anonymously.

Chapter 02
How to measure a wall, a room, doors and windows
How to measure a wall, a room, doors, windows and a bathroom, with drawings.
Good numbers come from good measurements. Every tool asks for sizes, and the rules are the same everywhere: measure to the finished surface, write the number down, and check it once.
What to measure with
- Tape measure: hook it on one side, read it on the other. For a long wall, ask someone to hold the end.
- Laser measure: put it flat against one wall and aim at the other. The quickest way to measure a room.
- Phone Measure app: good for a first idea. Check with a tape before you order anything cut to size.
Measuring a wall
- Measure the whole wall. Roomveil takes the windows and doors off for you when you add them.
- If the ceiling slopes or the floor is uneven, measure at the highest point.
Measuring a room
Measuring doors and windows
There are three different things you might measure, and each one gives a different size to order. In the doors and windows tool, every door and window asks What did you measure? so it can work out the right size.
| What you measured | What Roomveil tells you to order |
|---|---|
| The old door slab, edge to edge | The same size. Standard widths are 24, 28, 30, 32, 34 and 36 inches, usually 80 inches tall (96 inches for tall doors). |
| The rough opening (framed hole, stud to stud) for a door | About 2 inches less wide and 2½ inches less tall. A 32 × 80 inch door needs a 34 × 82½ inch opening. |
| The rough opening for a new-construction window | About ½ inch less each way. |
| Inside the old window frame (replacement window) | The smallest of your three measurements, less about ¼ inch each way. |
Measuring a bathroom
Measure the floor wall to wall, across and front to back. Then measure where the pipes come out: the toilet drain is usually 12 inches from the wall behind it (this is called the rough-in).
Chapter 03
Walls: paint, wallpaper and tile
Paint, wallpaper and tile, step by step, for one wall or a whole room.
Use this tool to see a new paint color, wallpaper or tile on your wall, and to find out how many cans, rolls or tiles to buy. It works for one wall or a whole room.
Step 1 · How big is the wall?

- One wall or A whole room.
- The wall, drawn to scale. Drag the orange dot to resize it.
- Width: corner to corner, along the floor.
- Height: floor to ceiling.
- Units. You can still type any unit in the boxes.
Choose A whole room to paint every wall. You still measure the wall you will photograph, then add the room's length from front to back. Roomveil adds the other walls for you. It starts with 1 door and 1 window on the other walls; set them to 0 if there are none.

- Room length, front to back: the walls on each side of this one.
- Doors on the other walls. Each takes off about 21 ft².
- Windows on the other walls. Each takes off about 15 ft².
Step 2 · Anything on this wall?
Add each window, door or closet on this wall so it is left out of the count. A plain wall? Just press Continue.

- Add window, Add door and Add closet. More has fireplaces, switches, radiators, shelves, TVs and pictures.
- Drag an item to where it really is. Tap it to select it, then drag its orange dot to resize it.
- Each item is listed with its size. Tap it for exact sizes.
Windows, doors, closets and fireplaces are taken off the wall. Radiators, shelves, TVs and pictures are not: the new finish goes behind them.

Step 3 · Add a photo (optional)
Stand back and take one photo of the whole wall. Your phone's own photo picker opens, so there is no permission popup. Or press Sample room to try it first.

- Use my photo opens your phone’s photo picker.
- Sample room puts the practice room back.
- Your photo. Drag the four orange dots onto the corners of the wall.
Step 4 · Choose a look

- Paint, Wallpaper or Tile.
- Colors, or Any color. These are for the preview; at the store, pick the matching color card or ask them to match it.
- Coats. Two is normal. Use three when painting a light color over a dark one.
- Add primer for new drywall, patched walls or a big color change. Paint the ceiling too appears for a whole room.

- Roll size: a US double roll is 20½ inches × 33 feet; a European roll is 0.53 × 10.05 m. The size is printed on the label.
- Pattern repeat: the label says how far down the pattern repeats. A bigger repeat means more waste, so more rolls.
- My own pattern lets you try a picture from your phone.
- Wallpaper counts do not take off doors and windows: the offcuts go above and below them and still have to match the pattern.

A backsplash also asks for the Counter height (floor to the top of the counter), which starts at 36 inches. Tiles include 10% spare for cuts; tap the tile line to change it to 5% or 15%. You can also turn on Also paint the rest of the wall to add paint for the part above the tile.
Step 5 · Here’s how it looks

- Drag across the photo to compare the wall before and after.
- Match the room’s light keeps the shadows from your photo, so the result looks real.
- Try it on my own photo, or line up your photo again.
With your own photo, a Covering furniture or plants? row appears. Brush over anything that stands in front of the wall, and it stays in front of the new finish.
Step 6 · What you’ll need

- Each line shows what to buy and how it was worked out. Tap a line to see the working and set your own price.
- Show prices: example store prices. Turn them off to hide money altogether.
- Share sends the list and your plan.
- Done goes back to the homepage.

- Send this to a contractor opens your phone’s share menu (on a computer, it copies instead) with your sizes and the list, ready for a text or email.
- Get proper drawings of this room opens drawing mode. The first time, your sizes are already in; if drawings are already saved on this device, those open instead.

How the paint is worked out
Paint covers about 375 ft² per US gallon (makers say 350 to 400), or about 10 m² per litre. Roomveil takes the doors and windows off the wall area, multiplies by the coats, divides by the coverage and rounds up to cans you can buy. A little over a whole gallon becomes a gallon and a quart, not two gallons. Walls and ceilings use different paint, so the ceiling is a separate line.
Chapter 04
Floors: planks and tiles
Wood or vinyl planks and floor tiles, and how many boxes to buy.
See new wood planks or floor tiles in your room, and find out how many boxes to buy, with spare for cuts.
Step 1 · How big is the room?

- The room from above, to scale. Drag the orange dot to resize it.
- Add a Sofa, Bed or Table to check the layout. Fitted pieces under More, like kitchen cabinets or a wardrobe, are left out of the floor area.
Step 2 · Add a photo (optional)
Take one photo of the room showing the floor, then drag the four orange dots onto the points where the floor meets the walls. Or use the sample room.
Step 3 · Choose your floor

- Wood or vinyl planks, or Tiles.
- Color, then size.
- One box covers: the area printed on the box. Change it to match yours; this number decides how many boxes you buy.
- Add underlayment: the foam layer under the floor. Not needed if the planks have a pad attached.
Step 4 · See it in your room

- Drag across the photo.
Step 5 · What you’ll need

The area is the room's floor plus 10% spare for cuts and mistakes, divided by the box coverage and rounded up. Tap the floor line to change the spare to 5% (simple rooms, straight lay) or 15% (lots of corners, or a diagonal pattern).
Chapter 05
Doors and windows: styles and sizes to order
Choosing new doors and windows and the right size to order.
Choose new windows and doors, see them in your room, and get the size to order. The most important part is telling Roomveil what you measured.

- Add door.
- Each one is listed with its size and what you measured. Tap it to change them.

See Measuring doors and windows for the three ways to measure and what each one means.
Step 2 · Pick your styles

Doors also ask Which side are the hinges? Stand on the side the door opens toward you, look at it, and choose On my left or On my right.
Step 3 · See them in your room

- Drag across the photo to compare.
Step 4 · What you’ll need

Chapter 06
Bathrooms: layout and space check
Placing fixtures, the code space check and drain slope.
Place a toilet, sink, tub and shower on a plan of your bathroom. Roomveil checks that each one has the space the common US building code asks for, and works out the drain slope for your plumber.
Step 1 · How big is the bathroom?

Step 2 · Place your fixtures

- Drag a fixture to move it. Tap to select it, tap again to turn it or remove it. The green area in front of each is the space it needs.
- Each fixture shows Enough space, or what is wrong.

- The problem, in plain words.
Step 3 · Space check

Type the Drain pipe length, from the fixture to the main drain, and Roomveil works out how much the pipe must drop.
Step 4 · What you’ll need

Check the rough-in before you buy a toilet: most new toilets are made for a drain 12 inches from the wall, some for 10 or 14.
Chapter 07
Measured drawings: plan, walls, PDF and CAD
Plan, wall views and lists; PDF, CAD and spreadsheet exports.
Draw a measured room: a floor plan, the four walls, and lists of doors, windows and finishes. Print them to a real scale, save them as a PDF, or send a CAD file to an architect or builder. Roomveil keeps your drawings on this device.
Step 1 · Draw your room

- The plan. Drag the orange dot to resize. The walls are named A, B, C and D, clockwise from the top.
- Room name, width, length and ceiling height. More details adds wall thickness, the room number and a check that the room is square.
- The room as it is (a survey) or A new layout (a design).
Step 2 · Doors and windows

- Add a Door, Window or Doorway. More has built-in closets, fireplaces, radiators, and sockets or switches. Tap a door to make it hinged, double, sliding or pocket.
- The wall view. Drag the window up or along the wall; the sizes to each side update as you go.
Step 3 · Furniture and fixtures

Step 4 · Floor, walls and ceiling

Step 5 · Your drawings

- Three pages: the floor plan, the four walls, and the lists. Tap a page to look closer.
- Print or PDF. In the print window, choose Save as PDF to keep a file.
- CAD (DXF): a file for AutoCAD and other drawing programs, in inches or millimeters to match your units.
- Lists as a spreadsheet: CSV for Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.
- Copy a link to these drawings. The whole drawing travels inside the link; nothing is uploaded.
Vector sheets (SVG) are there too, for Illustrator, InDesign or Affinity.
For architects and designers
- Switch to Architectural in Settings (or Architect's terms on the homepage) for sill height, AFF, FFL, structural or rough opening, and schedules. The US version uses feet and inches; the UK version uses millimeters.
- Sheets come in A3, A4, 11 × 17 or Letter, at a standard scale from 1:20 to 1:500, or 1/2″ to 1/16″ = 1′-0″, with a title block and revision. With Architectural words the sheets carry a NOT FOR CONSTRUCTION stamp; everyday sheets say Check sizes on site before ordering.
- The DXF (AutoCAD R12) uses AIA / US National CAD Standard layer names such as A-WALL-E, A-DOOR-E, A-GLAZ-E and A-ANNO-DIMS.
- Checks, for guidance: door clear width (ADA 32″, Approved Document M4(1) 775 mm), door swings hitting furniture, fixture space, and rooms out of square.
Chapter 08
Your shopping list, prices and sharing
Reading the shopping list, prices, and sending it on.
Every tool ends on What you'll need: the shopping list. This chapter explains how to read it, change it and send it.
Reading the list
- The top lines are the main things to buy, with the amount in the sizes stores sell: gallons and quarts, full boxes, whole rolls.
- You'll also need lists the tools and small parts people forget.
- Tap any main line to see How we worked it out. Depending on the line, you can change the coats (paint), the spare for cuts (floors and tiles), the box coverage (floors) and the price.
Prices
The prices are example store prices so you can see a rough total. Tap a line to type the price from your own store. Turn Show prices off to hide them. Change the money symbol with the $ £ € Rs buttons under Total.
Sharing
- Share sends the list as text: to WhatsApp, email or a message. Take a screenshot of the before and after to send the picture.
- Send this to a contractor opens your phone's share menu (on a computer, it copies instead) with your sizes and the list. A contractor can price it without visiting first to measure.
- Get proper drawings of this room opens drawing mode. The first time, your sizes are already in. If you already have drawings saved on this device, those open instead, so check the sizes.
Chapter 09
Pro mode: prices, labor and quotes for trades
For trades: price list, labor, markup, tax and a PDF quote.
Pro mode is for painters, flooring and tile installers, window and door fitters, remodelers and general contractors. It turns the shopping list into a priced quote with your labor, your markup and your company name. It is free. Your prices are saved on your device for next time.
Turning it on
Open Settings (the cog) and turn on Pro mode, or use the Pro mode switch in the Professionals part of the homepage. Choose My trade so the tips and examples fit your work.
Your priced list

- Materials and labor, each on its own line. Tap a line to set your price.
- Markup, tax and terms.
- Quote turns the list into a quote for your client.

Markup, tax and terms

- Markup on materials is built into the material prices your client sees.
- Charge tax on materials only, everything, or nothing. In some states, including Florida, a contractor doing home repairs usually pays sales tax when buying the materials and builds it into the price, instead of adding sales tax to the client's bill. If that is you, leave Sales tax at 0. Rules differ by state and by type of contract, so check yours.
- Minimum job, Deposit to book and Quote valid for are printed on the quote.
Your business details and labor rates
Open it from Settings → My business and price list (shown once Pro mode is on), or from Edit my business details and rates on the quote.

Making the quote

- Send quote gives a text quote for WhatsApp, text or email.
- PDF opens a one-page quote, with a drawing of the wall, to print or to save as a PDF and attach to an email.
Whole-room and multi-room quotes
In drawing mode, draw each room once. With Pro mode on, step 4 has Quote this room (or Quote these rooms), which prices the walls, floor and ceiling of every room from the measured plan. See Measured drawings.
Roomveil on your own website
Homeowners can plan the job on your website, with your finishes and your prices, and send it to you measured, with a price range. It works with a noumansadiq.com back-office system.
